Bulgarian farmers` experience exchange in Edirne

03.06.12 | News

From the 29th to the 30th of May 2012, in Edirne, took place a two-days farmers` visit under the project "Effective, sustainable and environmentally friendly practices in the border region" (Contract № RD-02-29-166/01.07.2011), implemented by Institute for Regional Strategies - Burgas, in partnership with the local branch of the European Institute and the Association of producers of agricultural and dairy products, Edirne Province.

The forum was attended by 10 Bulgarian farmers who had the pleasure to share information, experience, problems related to the agricultural production, best practices in the field of agro-ecological problems. The experience in cooperation and association of the Turkish manufacturers proved to be quite strong and good example for their Bulgarian colleagues. Unlike the situation in Bulgaria, a single farmer cannot survive in Turkey or at least he cannot take advantage of all the benefits that the state provides otherwise. In this regard, they stressed that it is impossible for milk manufacturers to sell their production unless it is done by the association to which they belong, nor can they receive subsidy for quality milk, nor for the purchase of equipment. All these examples have led farmers to ask questions we`ve being trying to answer for a long time in Bulgaria, i.e. "how to maintain trust and how does an organization like this work smoothly." The answers of their Turkish colleagues were simple and understandable, i.e. "professionalism, professional solidarity and iron control by the state, but mostly internal."

Besides their colleagues, the Bulgarian farmers also visited the biggest market for plant and animal production in the region, as well as a slaughterhouse for cattle, and the Thracian Rice and Sunflower Institute in Edirne. During the visit, the farmers also attended the three-day discussion forum of scientists from the border region where they had the opportunity to get acquainted with them and share some matters of importance. The result was the establishment of good contacts, which promised to turn into long-term relations.

The event was organized with the financial support of the Programme for Trans-border Cooperation Bulgaria-Turkey under the Instrument for Pre-accession Assistance,(CCI number 2007CB16IPO008), co-funded by the EU.
