Support for the Implementation of Policies and Strategies for the Successful Economic and Social Integration of Immigrants and Thirds Country Nationals in Bulgaria

On 1st October 2009 the European Institute launched the project “Support for the Implementation of Policies and Strategies for the Successful Economic and Social Integration of Immigrants and Third-Country Nationals in Bulgaria”, financed by the European Union through the European Fund for the Integration of Third-Country Nationals. The project is implemented in partnership with Sofia and Burgas Municipalities.

The project aims at providing thorough information, necessary for the actualization of the measures that affect integration of third-country citizens, in a format which is appropriate for the preparation of governing decisions on the basis of exchange of good practices with other member states of the European Union (EU). Within the project framework will be run a research and analysis of the policies of the economic and social integration of third-country immigrants on the territory of the EU, as well as of the benefits through which they contribute to the enhancement of the competitive power and the broadening of the cultural diversity in regions which attract these immigrants. The active inclusion of the immigrants in accordance with the common European policies represents a considerable contribution for the broadening of the scope of EU integration knowledge.

As target groups and the project activities and results are appointed third-country nationals with permanent or temporary residence in Bulgaria, more particularly on the territories of Sofia and Burgas Municipalities where the majority of the immigrants is concentrated. The countries of origin of the representatives of the target group are China, Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, Iraq, Afghanistan, Georgia, Armenia, Ukraine, Moldova and Russia (the enumeration is not exhaustive). As participants in the project will be also included representatives from the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy, the Ministry of Education, Science and Youth, the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Interior, the International Center for Migration Policy Development and the local authorities of Sofia and Burgas Municipalities. It is previewed that they constitute a consultative group.

The total duration of the project is 4 months.
